Amsterdam's synagogue expelled Baruch Spinoza at 23. The Church put his books on its banned list. He lived grinding lenses and wrote anyway: God is not a king who punishes. God is the whole of nature, and you are part of it.

Einstein, asked in 1929 if he believed in God, answered: "I believe in Spinoza's God."

Three layers

1. See the dates. Every doctrine you were told "Christianity always believed", with the year, the council and the source. Christ declared "of one substance" with the Father at Nicaea, 325; the full Trinity formula at Constantinople, 381. Original Sin with Augustine, around 410. Papal infallibility, 1870.
2. Read what they burned. The gospels left out, Nag Hammadi, the Index of Forbidden Books kept until 1966, the authors executed for what they wrote.
3. Walk free. The fear, the guilt, the sixty years already given. Named for what they are, and taken apart calmly.
